Kimunya pledges rail system in three years

An upgraded rail system in Nairobi and its environs should be complete in the next three years, Transport minister Amos Kimunya has said.

The project, which will cover a 100 km radius from Nairobi Railway Central Station, is expected to ease traffic congestion in the city. The plan involves improving and doubling the existing track in greater Nairobi and greater Nairobi Metropolitan region. Kenya Railways has already undertaken a feasibility study for the improvement and expansion of the railway system. The minister also said there were plans to establish a light transit system and bus rapid transit system.
