Kenya upgrades Kisumu old rail track, dims SGR
SUMMARY
- Refurbishment of the century-old rail network expected to start in coming months.
- The government had earlier ruled out reviving the line that had fallen into disrepair.
- Kenya dropped its bid to extend the SGR to Kisumu and later on to the Ugandan border after failing to secure a multi-billion-shilling loan from China.

Uhuru abandons Naivasha-Kisumu SGR construction plans
After months of sourcing for additional money for the extension of Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha to Kisumu, President Uhuru Kenyatta has after all dropped the plans...
As a temporary solution before securing any loan for extension of SGR, the government has now opted to revive the old Nakuru-Kisumu Meter Gauge Line which has been out of service.
Transport CS James Macharia on Wednesday said that the Kisumu line, which had a thriving passenger service in the 1990s, will form the major supply route to deliver cargo to the neighbouring countries through the Kisumu port...

This is seen as a blow to Raila Odinga who would have loved to use {the SGR} too {sic} woe voters from from the lake region and western Kenya come 2022 as a project his much publicised handshake with president Uhuru had achieved among many others for the region...
