I have never understood the theory of opening the smokebox door when raising steam. I know the old steam men say its to stop the smokebox sweating, and that if you dont do it the loco wont raise steam. From the last fifteen years of my experience, all that it achieves is to make a mess of the front end and headlight. It's called the reverse draft theory down in my corner of the world and actually adversely effect the draft on the fire..
