PROMISE TO REVAMP UGANDA’S RAILWAY

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) presidential candidate Olara Otunnu has promised to revive the country’s railways. He says no economy in the world can prosper without a railway network because it is the cheapest means of transport for business.

During the UPC regime in Uganda, Otunnu said, farmers could access markets as far as the East African coast.

He told rallies on 31 January in the sub-counties of Kachumbala, Kidongole, Kolir and Malera in the Bukedea district: “I am dismayed to see that part of the railway line on the Mbale-Soroti highway has been sealed with tarmac.”

The Government’s reluctance to re-establish the railway, he said, had given thieves the opportunity to vandalise it.
