Reminds me of taking Amtrak from Pittsburgh to Detroit via Chicago a few years back. Union Station in Chicago is also a grand building not in keeping with the with the level of passenger train activity down in the basement. Dug out my old diary. The passenger boat from Kosti was very new with two large diesel engines, didn't carry vehicles but they accepted two motorbikes though we had to manhandle them ourselves across a number of barges to get them on the rear deck. Not a lot. We went through in May/June 1982 when the South was open (but Ethiopia was not). I've got shots of riding the tracks across the Nubian desert but all rather dark as it was very early in the morning to avoid the heat. While visiting Abidjan last month spotted an ex SAR 33 class working in the docks. But things are looking up for the 1m gauge national rail system which runs inland to Burkina Faso as this article from UIC wed site clearly indicates. I presume the locos are from China (?)
