Re: Police officer saves man from oncoming train

Interesting. But was it set up? If I was driving that train I would have been hanging on the horn, not just sounding the bell. I don't hear any sound of the loco horn being used. The train manages to stop around the point where the man was sitting. Good loco brakes?

Nicely done Nathan. Much superior to all those TV cooks on the cooking channel.

Made my mouth water :-)

Re: Snowdrift at Bleath Gill 1955 (video)

When I was small, my family and I would pass by, close to this place, while driving over Stainmore to visit an aunt and uncle. It is indeed bleak place and I can vividly remember some of the snowstorms we went through in wintertime. I never traveled the line by train, although my father, an avid ...

Re: Norman Bussi RIP

Norman was a great character. Loved our trains and was always there to help out, especially with our excursions. In my memory I can hear him chatting away during our regular tea-breaks in the old coach we used. His legacy goes on in the work he put into our coaches, still taking hundreds of happy ...

Re: The night shunt

Peter, thank you for the photos and your effort to preserve steam locomotives in SA. Thanks John for posting them. Without this we would have no record of what is going on. It is almost, yes, almost but not quite like being there. Smell the smoke, steam and oil. Watch 'Trainman' whirling his arms as ...

John, The I think photos are not displayed because of a reference fail on it's <img> tag. http://www.friendsoftherail.com/forum/download/file.php?id=2474&t=1 Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found) If you treat it as a link (the clicking bit!!) then it works.

Re: Amtrak train derails in Vermont

This was on the news, here, yesterday. The term landslide which is used by the press is a bit misleading. What seems to have happened and is quite common around here is that some rock has split off due to weathering and fell onto the track. Cold winters and hot summers cause this 'calving' of the ...

How would you like to drive this train?

Blasting through the snow at a crossing, I am sure the driver had fun - though not for the cameraman.

John,

The attached .pdf file seems to be corrupted. I can not view it and Adobe reader is unable to repair it.

Re: Alaska Railroad on DSTV

I have seen quite a few episodes of this series. I found them a little 'sensationalised', presumably for the not quite so hardy train buffs, but still quite interesting. After a while it becomes somewhat repetitive as it only covers one line. Nice to watch and enjoy where there is not too much on ...

And so, does anyone know the 'real' story behind the scrapping? Does this men the locos bodies might be available for a club?

Oh yes! And adding that perhaps Henry could be persuaded to shoot some up to date footage at Hermanstad and re-edit the video to make a nice advertising video we could use for promotion.

Re: Video produced of the 21st anniversary

The hand fired 15F. We had that loco for quite a while. I shall not get into the politics of it!! Wasn't it called Littlefoot, No 2914. While we had her, Trevor Staats and I made a plan in which we attached a video camera to the fireman's side to film the trip from Cpk to Cullinan. The idea was we ...
