Class 18 690

Post by Andreas Umnus »

I found a picture on Craig Duckham's blog of the class 18 690.

I tried to ask the question at thatsite, but I think I need a profile there.
So I ask it here, maybe someone knows the answer.

Why looks the class 18 690 so different to the other class 18 locos? Is it the only class 18 which looks so different?

You can the picture of the loco here (small):

or bigger (it is the second one):

Hi Andreas. The class 18E locos are re-builds from the original class 6E1 locos. Where the class 6E1 had a driving cab at each end, the re-builds only have a driving cab at the number 1 end. The locos are mostly intended to operate in semi-permanent pairs. The driving position (right hand side) originally in the cab at the number 2 end has been converted into an on-board toilet and the old driver's windows have been filled-in. Of course, because most pictures are taken from the front as the locos approach, one does not normally see the windowless rear cab.

As the re-builds have continued, detail changes have been made. In general the old trapezoid cab front windows have been replaced with stronger rectangular ones, although this is not universal; some still retain the original trapezoid left-hand window at the rear end. In addition, the liveries have changed over the years too. The early conversions were painted "Spoornet" dark blue. The most recent conversions carry the new Transnet Freight Rail red and yellow colour scheme. Some have been branded for PRASA (to haul their passenger trains) and are painted in PRASA's light powder blue colour with a PRASA logo.

See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Afri ... ,_Series_1 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Afri ... ,_Series_2 for more information. There are also many good pictures on Railpicures.net.

Steve,
Thank you for your explanation about the class 18 and the links to wikipedia.

When I saw the pictures at Craig's Blog I was wondering if all class 18 locos have only one window on the other side, but I could it not recognize while watching the pictures #3, 5. I also saw the different windows like you described them.
I never had expected that these locos have an toilet inside on there rear end.

Your answer is as most of your answers very informative.
