19D no 2650 stands at Eerste Fabrieke. Here we had to wait for a couple of hours for authority to proceed into the single line section where construction is taking place, while a seemingly endless series of Metro trains was allowed to go ahead of us. Finally, after the last Metro, we had to wait for a lash-up of four TFR locomotives to come through.

It was good to see driver Les Labuschagne back on the footplate. Here he eats lunch, heated up on the flame plate.

Whatever you may think it looks as if he is doing, Les is actually replacing the wooden train staff in its yellow box at Rayton. Possession of the staff gives authority for a train to enter the Cullinan branch; no other train can then enter without the staff.
