Nathan wrote:Phillip, Robert, Spikkels, Nathan and Chris, went out to Cullinan with Phillip's pickup and trailer in which was the go kart! Spent time weed spraying a portion of the triangle and the station line from the tar road to the water column section.

During that time, while Chris was busy spraying, we went up by trolley to recce the line and found a possible reason why the loco always loses her feet at the top of the curve on the climb out of Cullinan in the cutting.

The checkrail near the top is almost completely filled in up to rail level with compacted stone, sand and ground, over the years and we think that on that spot, the loco tractive effort is mainly flanged, with the wheel not making sufficient good rail contact. This will be the next project in August to sort out.

Then we railed on to the first tar crossing near Rayton, where we turned the trolley and motored back. On the return we tackled some serious tree growth on this section from the sand Zonkoloi crossing towards the main tar crossing.

Thereafter we dropped Phillip and Spikkels near the abattoir spot to tackle the brushes there, whilst Robert and I went to get food in Cullinan.

This was when the trolley started giving hassles with fuel flow problems, and we ended up finally in desperation, back at the top of the Cullinan cutting.

No fear, we ate lunch whilst the unfortunate duo of Spikkels and Phillip slowly walked back to meet us.
No time was wasted, as Chris was spraying in the cutting and I tackled a terrible bush just past the cutting with the chainsaw.

Thanks to Steve Smith for the loan thereof.

Pushed the trolley back to Cullinan, stopped outside the station steakhouse and had a beer, then tackled the frame of a points lever near the water column, and it is now safely at Hermanstad.
A successful tiring day to be repeated in August so volunteers, step right up!
