SAR Stored/Operating Steam Loco list

Post by John Ashworth »

Bob originally posted this on the sar-L. I responded with a couple of small corrections re FOTR locos, and he asked me to post the revised version on the FOTR forum for our own experts to comment.
Bob Hogan wrote:I have recently spent a good deal of time compiling a "current" list of SAR
stored and/or operating steam locomotives by location, current thru August 2009.
A number of folks here in the USA had been asking me for this, so I tried to
create as accurate a list as I could from the various resources available.
These resources include Middleton's 2009 update to his Railways of Southern
Africa book, the various web list postings on surviving steam locos, recent web
photos, Steam in Action's latest Millsite listings, plus the official railroad
websites and books (such as Steam Passion and Sandstone Steam Railroad) for the
operating tourist steam railroads. I have not included any plinthed (stuffed &
mounted) locomotives as these already exist on another website.

This list is now in the Files section under "SAR stored steam locos 2009". If
anyone gets the time and energy, I would appreciate receiving any updates,
changes and/or revisions to this list. I'm sure I have omitted a few
locomotives and perhaps a few have been moved or scrapped since the mid-year
lists I have used.

I started this list last year and it is interesting to note the changes when THF
recently "cleaned out" certain storage sites by scrapping everything that was
there. Bethlehem, Warrenton and Kroonstad for example. Additionally, the CWRMT
Compound/Epping and Dal Josafat's stock was all moved to Worcester or Cape Town.
Hopefully the Hilton museum collection has/is all going to Mason's Mill, as
planned. I know some of the listed locomotives are in poor condition based on
photos and reports, however, I have kept them listed as "stored" rather than
"dumped", as some formerly "dumped" locos have been restored in recent years.

It was sad and amazing to note the hugh number of 25NC's (real and converted),
and 15F's that were cut up recently. Some were first or last of class built.
Likewise, it is amazing to note that two of the last four Class 23's were cut up
at Millsite. Of the 134 built, only 2 remain of what, combined with the 15F's,
made up the mainstay of SAR's mainline 4-8-2 power in the 70's and 80's.

Enjoy, and thanks for any help with updates.

Aren't there three 19Ds being operated by a paper mill somewhere in KZN? Anyone got details?

Well Done. Plenty of work must have gone into compiling this list. When a Loco is marked stored, does it mean that it could be made operational without to much work.
Thanx

Excellent list, but there is one thing in that list that bugs me....

"SOUTH AFRICA NATIONAL RAILWAY & STEAM MUSEUM (SANRASM):
Krugerdorp, Johannesburg.
Founded in 1982 as RSSA. As hugh collection at 3 locations (North, South, Chamdor).
Operations now concentrated at South site and Chamdor. Operates steasm over small
portions of REGM lines from South site monthly."

Apart from the typo's, they no longer operate steam over REGM lines. And nothing is operational. Reefsteamers runs day trips for them. SANRASM's north site is also in Randfontein and not in Springs as per that list. Unless they have a site in Springs too...

Reefsteamers also have a class 12AR 1535 that is operational.

You should take a look at Piet Conradies website of plinthed loco's to pic up any other odds that are still standing at stations and various places throughout the country.
Not quite on the rails.

re Luca's remark about Queenstown

There are still a couple of loco's in the Queenstown "grave yard" - about a dozen engines - all in very poor condition -- we visited there on 27 Aug 2009. I still have to work out which engine numbers are identifiable in in my photos.

I also seen the list. A loco to be added is class A 133 at Umgeni Steam Railway.
This loco is not on the list.

Using my photos taken in Aug 2009, the list for Queenstown seems to be correct, with one more locomotive:

In addition to the listed:

"19D #3337"

there also is a

19D #3330 with tender no 2714.

As far as I can establish from the photos there are 19 engines "stored" on the site.

There had been more loco's, but some time since 2004, a number of very derelict engines had been torched.

This loco is not on the list.
Class A #196 is presently at Masons Mill in storage for the North British Preservation Society. This loco is not ex Escom. Our loco is NGR 88 (ex SAR #134) and is in storage at Inchanga. This is the loco that came from Eskom at Umgeni Power Station.

USR only has one GMAM #4074. The reference to 4126 comes from an identity crisis, when initially there was disagreement as to what number this loco should carry. It wasn't as case of using one loco as parts supply.

Other corrections:
- GF #2404 not USR's. (Belongs to THF)
- Class 11 #929, not USR's.
- Class 24 #3647, not USR's
- 19D #2685 owned by USR based at Inchanga is omitted from the list.
- 19D #2669, now lease lend to Ingwe Municipality, Creighton. USR does not operate out of Creighton. Ingwe Municipality run this operation under their own access agreement with TFR.

Once again, thanks for the help on updating this list. Here is a revised version incorporating all of the corrections I received from both the SAR-L list and FOTR Forum.

Please thank everyone on the FOTR Forum for their assistance as well. You are welcome to post the revised list.

This should be close!

Best regards,

Bob

Good find, Allan!
The mill railway works 24 hours a day all year round with shift changes at 8am, 4pm and 12am. Three steam locos are on site and all are painted in blue colour. No 1 (ex-Spoornet 2697, Borsig 14748/1938), No 2 (ex-Spoornet 2633, Skoda 928/1938), No 3 (ex Spoornet 2767, Robert Stephenson Hawthorn 7280/1947). While we were visiting, No 3 was running, No 2 in inspection, No 1 in reserve. All engines are usable and they are rotated in use on a four-weekly cycle. No 3 is promised to an UK preserved railway, but Sappi Saiccor will continue to work with the steam locos
So 19Ds nos 2697, 2633 and 2767 are alive and well and working hard! I see Bob has got them in the revised list.

One of their drivers used to drive for FOTR in Pretoria before he moved down there.

Hello John,
I found the list of stored locos just today. I find it really interesting to see which locos still present.

I'm not really sure what's the difference between
" THE OUTENIQUA CHOO-TJOE: George, Western Cape "
and the
" OUTENIQUA RAILWAY MUSEUM: George"

If " THE OUTENIQUA CHOO-TJOE: George, Western Cape " means not outside of the Outeniqua Railway Museum, then there are some changes.

Locos which are mentioned under "THE OUTENIQUA CHOO-TJOE: George, Western Cape " are:

19C 2439 - now seen inside the Railway Museum on 11.November 2009
7A 1007 - now seen inside the Railway Museum on 11.November 2009
16B 805 - seems to be new at the museum inside. I didn't found that engine on your list.

GF 2401 - standing outside of the Railway museum in George - seen on 11. November 2009
GEA 4023 - standing outside of the Railway museum in George - seen on 11. November 2009
GO 2575 - standing outside of the Railway museum in George - seen on 11. November 2009

I hope I could help with this posting.

Andreas
