Khartoum Light Railway/Municipal Tramway

Post by David Heath »

Does anyone know of any books or other resources that cover the Khartoum Light Railway/Municipal Tramway(s)? All I can find is a couple of pages at the end of Richard Hill’s (otherwise) excellent book, ‘Sudan Transport.’ I know the basic stuff i.e. opening date(s), electrification date and closing date etc., but I’m particularly interested in locomotive and tramcar details.
The attached old postcard shows an Orenstein & Koppel 0-4-2T and train. Were all the tramway locos built by O&K? As this one is numbered 6 with a build date of 1907, it can’t have been one of the original (two?) locos supplied for the opening. Hill suggests that those were not as powerful as the later batch.
And what about the electric tramcars? Who built those, how many of them were there and what was the voltage?
Any help/information gratefully received!
