PRASA awards Durban resignalling contract
27 March 2013

SOUTH AFRICA: Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has awarded the Bombardier Africa Alliance consortium a R1·1bn contract to re-signal 42 stations and 120 km of double-track on Durban's main commuter corridors by 2017.

Consortium leader Bombardier Transportation has a R318m share of the contract and will be responsible for signalling technology and overall project management. The other consortium members are ERB Technologies, Basil Read, Bakara Engineering, R&H Railway Consultants, SIMS and Tractionel.

Bombardier is to provide its Interflo 200 technology to support 2½ min headways, with EBI Lock 950 computer-based interlocking Release 4 and EBI Screen 900 local central traffic control systems. All lineside equipment is to be replaced, and optic fibre and voice radio communications provided. Civil works will include platform, track and overhead equipment modifications as well as new footbridges.

'Supporting South Africa in modernising and strengthening its rail control systems is a very exciting project and an important milestone in creating a long-term local presence in South Africa', said Peter Cedervall, President Rail Control Solutions at Bombardier Transportation.
"To train or not to train, that is the question"
