- What is this? A class 5E1 electric unit belonging to Rovos Rail, in primer coat and body filler, before the new corporate colour scheme is put on

- Facing up, class 25NC 3442 giving her new electric companion, class 5E1, the hot eye! Soon, these units will be operating on the main line and the steam days may become limited

- The ex 15M shop at the old steam depot Capital Park is now home to the Rovos Rail fleet. Simmering away between shifts is 25NC 3442, whilst the new face of future motive power, class 5E1, looks on

- Current scene at Rovos Rail loco depot. The old 15m shop at Capital Park shed in years past. However, not only has the shed function changed, but the face of modern traction is now going to be familiar. Late series class 5E1 unit, one of three at present, awaits her turn to be put into service, whilst the two withdrawn class 19D, share their past experiences

Re: The changing face of Rovos Rail
I don't think its a case of being uneconomical. TFR are a tad unreliable and I'm sure Rovos are making sure that they are self sufficient. Of course the banning of steam from the "Core Corridors" doesnt help much either.Stefan Andrzejewski wrote:Sad but is steam becoming uneconomical to run?

Re: The changing face of Rovos Rail
Er, I believe that that is the 6th class next to the dolly?
Rovos have been warned to get their own motive power. The idea is to run own locos and crews as far as possible. Apparently 6 more electric units are expected. More drivers are being trained.
So steam will in future only be seen on some limited local workings but mostly shunts. Even shunts will be threatened if a diesel manages to find its way into the stable.
