Real steam action...

Post by HenryLazenby »

For me, Rovos has provided the only opportunity to experience some 'real' hard working steam power, with heavy loads at times, unpredictable timings, and certainly a motley collection of engines throughout its history. I remember how the 6th class struggled with 14 coaches up Queenswood station or catching her breath near Rissik. A dollie on +-18 coaches slipping and sliding under Manie's efforts to pick up speed through Villieria station. Then the dollies came, the garratt and the 25 classes... And now electric!
This was a year or so ago through Fonteinedal Station. Probably not to be repeated, ever!

Great stuff Henry. I never got to see the D and GMAM double heading. I fired the GMAM on its own though. Very descriptive and historic stuff as we enter the 150th year of railways SA.

Long gone history. The Garratt was working through 2007, by the end of the year it was taken back by Wilfred to Germiston.
We still got her doubleheading with RS 15F 3016 on the return from Cullinan- she joind the F at CP. Got a nice video sequence as the giants pounded through Fountains in the dusk.
I really miss 4079- was definitely my favourite loco for a while...3117 holds that honour now!
