Patrys 4-8-2T SAR Class A
Another oldie at Reefsteamers is Patrys. A 4-8-2T SAR Class A No 130 Tank locomotive (built 1890) that has been plinthed on the premises. It heads up a static C-33 articulated saloon.
Not quite on the rails.

Are you referring to the ex-White train coaches as the white train?

Re: Patrys 4-8-2T SAR Class A
Hello Derek and all
The articulated coach is a C-22 type. These coaches were put into service with the Union Ltd/Express----They were never used on the White train although were used in the Pilot Train that ran before the White Train back in 1947. The colour you see is of the Orange Express although not original as the first time that colour came out was for the Pilot Train.
The type C-33 is an all steel coupe coach --there is a couple around still in their original condition and a majority were converted to AC-1 catering cars --one such example is 127 "Kango".
As to the loco--she is a former NGR loco.
Cheers
Carlos

Re: Patrys 4-8-2T SAR Class A
Sorry, I am getting my C-22's and C-33's all mixed up again. The 2 ex C-33 refreshment cars at Germiston were not taken away for scrap but were moved by Reefsteamers away from veld fires.
Not quite on the rails.

Re: Patrys 4-8-2T SAR Class A
Sorry problem here.
Dear Luca
Coach 42/R13 was used in the White train of 1947.
She was positioned between the 230/285 dining car "Orange" which served the royal family and 2754 type GC-25 which is a compo van from the Blue Train and the Drakensberg just like the dining car "Orange".
All these coaches refered here still exist.
SAR number 42/ White train R13 was used by the Minister of Transport ,Mr Sturrock and she is a complete private coach ---has kitchen/compartments and lounge not to forget air-conditioned.
Cheers
Carlos

Hello Again
Just a point of curiosity.
If we had to make up the Royal train again after all these years ---62 in fact --we still have all the coaches to do so.
Obviously not all in good condition but it is one of the trains that could be created again --the others being the 1939 Blue Train later known as the Drakensberg --there is enough coaches to make a set and the other is the original Union Ltd/Express as there are enough articulated coaches to make a set with Protea as the main dining car set and as a second set an A-22 pillared dining car with 795/796/797 which were her lounge cars at one stage with the 2295 the compo van in SANRASM and a K-36 as a baggage van.
All this ran behind a 16E loco..........Now that is a dream!!!!

Was mr Sturrock the Transport minister before or after the royal tour? According to old newspaper articles he must have been the minister round about the time when the royal tour took place...

Baie dankie Adelbert.
Mr Sturrock must've felt very proud of himself to lend his coach to the royal family. BUT, as minister of railways, wasn't he maybe part of the tour, showing the union off to the royals?
