I suspect that this is the new service that leaves JHB on Friday night to Mafikeng, then continues south to KIM on Saturday morning. That fits with the time that you saw this. The return working leaves KIM Sunday afternoon to Mafikeng, then overnight to JHB, arriving early Monday morning (too early to phot, excpet perhaps in summer if it is running late).

There's also been a thread on the sar-L with the following comments:

The planned departure tomorrow is 05h00 from Johannesburg, arriving at Boons at 07h55. Return departure is at 08h30 arriving back at Johannesburg at 11h25.

This will just be a light locomotive restricted to a speed limit of 60kph.

The last test on Thursday 28 May was stopped by TFR at Krugersdorp and it is presumed this test will not meet the same fate. [18 June]

The test was successful and the train to Mafikeng/Kimberley on Friday night was and all future trains will be hauled by these locomotives.[22 June]

Was confirmed at Kimberley at about 11:30 on Saturday morning by Peter Odell, about 2hrs ahead of schedule. [22 June]
