Botriver run through

Post by Stefan Andrzejewski »

I was fortunate to catch these 4 class 35's running through Botriver on their way to Caledon. I was suprised to see that Botriver station is in good shape and clean and in one piece.

Yup four workings per day with two conditional workings. Passes my office on a daily basis. My new office will be about 10m from the mainline!
Sad that these workings may come to an end though.

They certainly did. When we got to Caledon later that afternoon there were stacks of grain gondella's. It looked like hundreds of them in that shunting area.

Fanie I lost count maybe 40 or 50. I don't know what the Maximum length is. Maybe Dylan would know

In the railways' Genral Appendix is states that vacuum braked trains may not exceed 40 vehicles (160 axles). If the Local Appendix makes provision, ie. Western Cape LA, then a maximium lenght may certainly not exceed 50 vehicles (200 axles). Hope that helps . .

Depends on whether or not they are full. Sometimes 5 x 35's are used to take a full load to Caledon.
Wheat is railed to the docks and from other areas to the Maltsters! So u can have full loads in either direction.
Anything from 22 - 44 wagons. Max speed 30km/h 3000 ton trains!

Thanx Gabor and Dylan. There were 4 X 35's. Going towards Caledon I would assume that they were empty. It must have been close maximum axles. Just off the station towards Caledon I see the speed limit 10km/h. Further down I could hear the 35's accellerating.
