That first picture is my favourite too. Unfortunately the only shovel available was the fireman's one. Later it was decided to just go and and clear the sand away with the locomotive, it worked!

We have a dirt level crossing on the Cullinan branch which often has to be dug out before we can proceed across it; the fireman's shovel usually does duty there too!
