WW1 Military Railway Museum

Post by ch.janssen-schmidt »

A few weeks ago we visited the Le P’tit train de la Haute Somme. A remainder of the multitude of military railways which were laid during the First World War. On selected days a train runs the length of the line which includes a tunnel and a switch back.

The operation is well organized and were lucky to ride behind a Decauville for a short stretch (it being the first day of operations for the new year) Along the route are depots with workshops for the traction and rolling stock as well as permanent way yards. There are some treasures to be seen in the museum an Alco-Cooke from 1916 and a Orenstein & Koppel 0-8-0 of the same type as used in SWA by the State Northern. An interesting place!
