NRZ steam-hauled "Valentine Sashay"

Post by John Ashworth »

From the Garratt Yahoo group:
National Railways of Zimbabwe organised a steam hauled "Valentine Sashay on Sunday 17 Feb 2013..

The train departed Bulawayo station on scheduled time at 1500 hours for khami Siding.
Hauled by a very well presented 15th Class 395, in black livery and red and silver wheels and motion
16A 613 was held in steam in reserve.

Unfortunately, a few minutes after departure, one of the carriages developed a leak in the vacuum braking system
This took about an hour to repair, arriving at Khami at 16 30.
Departing Khami at 1700, and arriving back in Bulawayo at 1800
The carriages were then shunted into the Railway Museum where approximately ninety passengers
enjoyed a three course meal before the carriages were shunted back to the station at 2100 .

The consist was:-
Dining cars 666/667, 668/669 and 646
Ist class sleeper 1045
Observation carriage 754
Baggage van 254 complete with generator
Steam Shed breakdown coach 1819
Diesel DE9 1963 in-tow.

Portland Cement are celebrating 100 years in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo, and are planning to run a private steam
hauled train from their factory at Cement Siding to their processing Plant at Colleen Bawn along
the privately owned Bulawayo / Beit Bridge railway in about two weeks time

Previous attempts by steam enthusiasts to run excursions on this line have always been rebuffed.
