Cape Gov't Railways locos sent to the Sudan in the 1890s?

Post by John Ashworth »

A query posted to the sar-l io group about three weeks ago:

It is well known that CGR class 6 and class 7 locos (and others built to the same designs, I believe) end up on that system. However, my query is about a pair of Beyer Peacock-built 2-6-0ST locos constructed for the Ferrocarril de Taltal in Chile in 1885. On completion the purchasers were rather strapped for cash, and so decided to sell them on. I believe they were purchased by the British government, and sent, via Egypt or the Cape, to the Sudan Government Railways where they may only have arrived in 1896. In other words they may have spent some time on the CGR.

Ant thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Any takers?
