Thuthukani trip to Naledi then to Mabopane

Post by Jerome West »

To promote the 100 days to the FIFA 2010 Soccer World Cup, Metrorail took the Thuthukani train set from Park Station to New Canada to Naledi and back to Park Station. From here we went to Germiston to Oakmoor to Pretoria and ended up in Mabopane. I thought the vuvuselas would kill me but I was in the drivers cab all the way. One the one side of the set was the Thuthukani unit with its 12 cinema seats right behind the driver and behind that a lounge. On the other side of the 13 unit set was a 5M2A. Enjoy the photos.

The early British Rail DMUs used to give passengers a great view forward. Now in Europe it seems you can only get this on driverless trains such as London's Docklands Light Railway and parts of the Copenhagen metro. Nice to see it in South Africa.

Great pics!! What is the general use of this set. I once saw a advert in the 'Carlton Centre' for chartering a Metro train, is this the set?

Marc, it is used for training drivers but I am sure that it can be hired for other uses.
