UK - Trains in London - Part 1

Post by Andreas Umnus »

I was last year with a friend in London for about one week. Our idea was to take some pictures of trains in London. But unfortunately isn't it easy to take pictures of trains in the city of London.
There is a special law and you have someone (the station manager) to ask if you may take pictures at the station. Luckily we found always a person who allowed us to take pictures. Some of them wanted to know where we will going to take the pictures and how long we intended to stay.

They told then the other security members (if there were more) that we will walk around and take pictures. But some stations were too busy and we didn't ask and didn't take pictures of trains. I not really like that law and because you can take pictures here in Germany without ask someone, it was a little bit strange for us.

Has anyone of you a tip for taking pictures at busy stations? Maybe some of the English people who read in this forum can give tips.

One time we met an English railfan and he told us we can take pictures on stations where no station manager is.

The other problem in London is that the railings of the bridges are too high. We almost couldn't watch over them. Sometimes we found bridges with not so high railings, but not often. Also there are often fences beneath the tracks in the city, so there was it also almost impossible to take pictures. But nevertheless, it was a nice visit in London.
Here are now some pictures which I all took on our first day (03.09.2012).

Thanks, Andreas. It's good to have you posting on the forum again after what seems like a long absence! Great pictures, despite the difficulties. It's always interesting to see one's country (and one's trains) through the eyes of a visitor. You're right about the walls of bridges being too high - very frustrating. I don't live in UK any more so I don't get to take pictures there much. When I am visiting I don't take serious photos, just occasionally snaps when I am travelling on a train, so I never ask for permission.

I was in the USA earlier this year and I wanted to to take photos of freight trains passing through an Amtrak station. There was a sign saying the station manager should be notified (rather than asking permission). When I notified her, she was very surprised that someone had actually notified her!

Yes, sometimes I'm a while away. But I always come back to this forum because it is interesting.
Unfortunately there are still too less pictures (except in the Friends of the Rail part) of latest electric motive power, diesel power and so on. I really miss up to date pictures of passenger or freight trains.
I always wonder why - I think there must be people out there who take pictures. Why they don't post them here?

Yes it is always that way that visitors have often another view for locations. Maybe that is a suggestion for you when you're the next time back in London to have an eye at locations?
