Australia: Sydney interurban - 0, tree - 1

Post by Steve Appleton »

From the photographer, Dennis Mitchell (copyright):
Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia. Large tree fell on the train in a windstorm.
I talked to the driver of this train, Donna Black, from Mt Victoria depot. She said that they lost power in high winds just before Medlow Bath station. Five minutes later the tree crashed into the first car. The train was nearly empty and had only 3 more stops before terminating after a two-and-a-half hour run from Sydney. Only 3 passengers were slightly injured (scratches mostly). It could have been a lot worse if it had happened even 10 minutes earlier, before a lot of passengers would have alighted at Katoomba, a major town and tourist destination. Medlow Bath is the first station after Katoomba.
