Nairobi Railway Museum October 2011

Post by John Ashworth »

Progress continues at the museum. Floor tiles are being laid in the newly renovated former refrigeration department at the Mombasa Rd end of the museum. This new section of the museum will include an office, gift shop, kitchen, lecture hall and more exhibition space.

Once it is finished, some of the exhibits will be moved in immediately so that the roof of the main existing museum can be replaced. The next step will then be to renovate the unused rooms at the Nairobi Station end of the museum to form a library, photographic studio (to deal with all the old photos and films in the museum) and other facilities.

There are plans to renovate 1950s restaurant car no 4516, which is in truly appalling condition since the roof rotted away, and use it as a static restaurant in the covered platform area behind the museum. Coach 1130, from the same era, will probably also be renovated and used for customers to sit whilst drinking their tea. There are rumours that once these coaches have been moved, the free space created will be filled with the steam crane which is currently languishing in the workshop.
