The Last Days Of NSW Australia Steam

Post by johngaydon »

Once again, I have been busy writing more articles at http://steamtrainstories.com recording my excursions during steam days.

As many of you will know, apart from North America, where everything is bigger, Pacifics were the Express Passenger choice for many railways. I missed the mighty 16Es in South Africa, and the many small but incredibly fast British versions. There are the Chaplain Pacifics of France finished long before I got to that part of the world, and I did managed to photograph and ride on the 012s in Northern Germany at over 120 kph.

In Australia,Pacifics were used on many prestige trains. Althouth the Pm and Pmrs in Western Australia survived until 1971, the last Steam hauled Express train in Australia was the Newcastle Flyer hauled by 3820 in December 1970.

I have put together some photos and memories from that time, the last "Tour Of Duty" of a 38 class in regular service.

I hope you enjoy it.
