In view of the dates of the photos/posts in below page, the date for the order given in the Railway Gazette is suspect
http://2bangkokforum.com/showthread.php ... ive!/page7

SDA1 were MTU 20V4000 powered standard gauge units for Australia (SCT/SBR/Bradken/Qube) Chinese electrics

SDA2 small order of five 20V4000 powered Cape gauge units with ABB electrics for Pacific National. Trial batch, built under direct PE supervision at CSR Qishuyan. Locos appear to be buggy, after 6 months of testing/trials do not appear to be in revenue service

SDA2 is interesting as it uses a cloned Australian UGL/GE NR class (standard gauge - PN owns 119) Cv40-9i frame. This locomotive may hold some clues to Transnet's Chinamen due to common ABB design input. There is a growing school of thought, that CSR/CNR (now merged as CRRC) are acting as assembly subcontractors to overseas principals for some export orders. This move effectively bypasses the Party imposed monopoly of the Chinese university based locomotive design bureaus

The SDA3 appears to be an indigenous Chinese design, this is the Cat 175-16 prime mover with what appears to be a Chinese alternator https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/ ... 6049_n.jpg

The Chinese have still to master the art (possibly due to the Party maintaining the monopoly of locomotive design bureau attached to universities - these theoretical engineers live in magic mushroom land) of slaving the auxiliary alternators off the main. Instead they use a convoluted system of Carden shaft, and a splitter gearbox. In this photo of an undelivered Zimbabwe SDD6 in China, you can see the (red) shaft running forward to the splitter gearbox, and the 2 auxiliary alternators http://www.cs-railway.com/uploadfile/im ... 282%29.jpg

This photo shows a "toasted" MTU 20V4000 coming out of a KiwiRail CKD-9B, with alternator attached, the auxiliary alternator can be clearly seen through the hatch. With ABB appointed the design authority for Transnet's new Chinamen (thus TE has a convenient scapegoat if ABB's choice of prime mover is a lemon), Transnet will probably avoid this dogs breakfast of an arrangement
