3117's mechanical stoker motor under repair and maintenance

Post by Gabor Kovacs »

With the recent trips, it was found that 3117's mechanical stoker motor was wasting large amount of oil while in use.

Robert Dadford, decided to remove the stoker motor for repairs and maintenance.
During the past week Robert and Spikkels un-done and removed all plumbing and coupled the universal joint between the motor and the stoker drive staft.

Yesterday, Saturday, 13th March 2010 - I assisted Robert to remove the stoker motor and started with cleaning the motor and checked for other faults. Here are a few pics.

Thanks, Gabor. The stoker motor doesn't usually see the light of day and I can't say I've ever seen one in its full glory before. Usually you just get to see a bit of it when you open the flap on the side of the tender to check the oil.

I assume the Stoker Motor runs on steam. Can one of the experts give us a rundown on how it works and operates.
Thanks

The stoker motor itself itself has two steam cylinders, these are the two round parts at the one end of the stoker motor. These drive a crank shaft at the other end of the motor, this is encased and runs in oil. A drive is taken from the motor by a long shaft to a reduction gear box as the back of the coal space of the tender. The output of this gearbox drive the stoker screw which feeds the coal from the tender to the firebox.

Hope this make it a bit clearer how it works

Just to prove that Gabby actually did clean, wash and bathe this little steam stoker engine himself.

Wonderfull. Now we should be ready to roll them in on the next trip and be secure in the knowledge that the motor is fixed. Mind you, it will still be fun to hand fir the loco. Well done guys who fixed this up.
