2650 Derailment 2012-11-30

Post by Steve Appleton »

FOTR's class 19D, number 2650, was derailed at slow speed on a tight curve in a cutting about 800 metres before Cullinan station at 11:35 on 30 November 2012. The immediately apparent cause was about 60 missing wooden sleepers, presumed stolen during the night previous. The damage was significant although not too severe. Essentially it appears that the cow-catcher, brake gear and ashpan took the brunt of the grounding. A couple of the metal bearings were also sheared in the tender axle boxes.
There was no damage to the rolling stock. However, the first passenger coach tettered on the end of a rail, just millimetres away from derailment!
Fortunately nobody was hurt in the incident.
