If you were to lie on your back in the smokebox and look upwrds, this is what the header looks like, where the various elements will fit. These recessions are currently scaled up and will need to be cleaned and polished  before receiving the element, whose heads, too, have to be polished.

Lets look in the boiler.<br /><br />The  locomotive raises steam by the boiling of water. The steam will then rise, and on a conventional &quot;domed&quot; boiler, the steam will be collected there and taken to the superheater header where it is reheated to eliminate all the water content, before being sent to the steam chest. Large locomotives such as the 15F, 25 class, had bigger boilers and thus no room for a dome, so a number of  &quot;collector&quot; pipes are fitted into the boiler at the highest internal point, to perform the work of the &quot;dome&quot;.<br /><br />A few class 19D were built with &quot;domeless&quot; boilers, and 2650 is one of them. Here we can see the collector pipes looking like rows of small trumpets.

A closer view towards the firebox crown plate end. The crown stays are visible, as are three lead filled fusible plugs that are the compulsory safety devices fitted to all boilers. Some locomotives have up to 5 fitted.

Finally inserted. Special black graphite and oil mix has been smeared on the element ends and a final tightening. One down, many more to go!

A busy scene at Capital Park. The class 19D has had a number of flue tubes replaced and is being prepared for it's annual 3 year recertification. The elements have all been removed and pressure tested, but before replacing, a lot of work has to happen
