What is that framework on top of the tender for?

The thin metal frame is standing behind the tender, not on top of it. It's a frame standing over our inspection pit for putting up a tarpaulin to shade us and the locos from sun and rain - unfortunately we don't have a shed.
What you can just about see on top of the tender is a wooden extension, a single plank on each of the four sides of the tender, which allows us to carry a significant extra quantity of coal on long trips such as the Witbank marathon.

It is a very misleading picture, isn't it ? I could not have done better if I had tried!!!!

Naah, come on Kev. That framework is a coal extension for long trips and the light is for loading and trimming at night. Most unusual photo. Perhaps a bit of photo shop here!!!
