- The ingenuity of a fitter! Robert Dadford devised this system of bench (wheelbarrow chassis) testing a locomotive dynamo, after refurbishing it. Steam is taken from an extension pipe, coupled to the reverser steam and then, via a regulating valve, steam enters the dynamo. He then has electrical connections leading to a sealed beam headlight and two cab globes mounted on a wooden frame. There is a voltmeter fitted, and the settings are made to reach 32v operating current. Simple isn't it?!

- Robert Dadford has been refurbishing dynamos for Selebwe Pikwe locomotives, in Botswana. He has had a number of small, yet vital, parts manufactured as well as collecting the last remaining spares from Surtees company. Viewed here is the governor and brush contact parts on the inside of the dynamo

- The dynamo works! Headlight and two cab lights will be operating at 32v, but first Robert Dadford makes the adjustments to get the required setting. Simple yet effective way of testing dynamos!
