Century City Plinthed NG's

Photos of locomotives and stock plinthed - can be steam, electric, diesel locomotives or other stockn items! Photos should be 800x600 pixels, maximum size 130K. Very good ones will be moved to the Online Gallery, the rest will be pruned away eventually to conserve space. Century City Plinthed NG's

I found these two narrow gauge Loco's plinthed at one of the Complex's at Century City. I don't know if they were to be used at Century City. When Ratanga Junction was first built they had a NG railway line running around the perimeter. These two look in good condition from the exterior. Can anyone provide some history on these two. The Garratt's plate is marked "112 NG/G16". The Tank engine has no identification.

These locos were restored cosmetically by Sandstone a few years ago.The below from the CREA newsletter aka Mark Robinson:
CENTURY CITY
As previously noted, there are two plinthed locos at the new sports and recreation complex at this site. Standing adjacent to the entrance to the Intaka Island nature area and opposite the new The Clubhouse and Century City House. The two are;

North British 0-6-0T 19790 of 1912 ex. Transvaal & Delagoa Bay Collieries No.4, ex. Douglas Colliery No.3, ex. Sandstone Heritage Trust
Beyer Peacock 2-6-2 2-6-2 6922 of 1939, ex. SAR&H Class NGG 16 No.112, ex. Midmar Museum, ex. Monex (Century City!), ex. Sandstone Heritage Trust

The two were mounted a long time ahead of the competition of the buildings, however with that completion getting close, the Project Manager decided that the two engines needed smartening up, having assessed that the NGG 16 had considerable rust areas starting show although the 0-6-0T still looked quite good from its restoration at Sandstone prior to their delivery to the complex. Also, after standing in the sun for a while both were starting to show signs of fading.

The PM, to his credit decided that this freshening-up should not be done by simply splashing paint over existing paint (and rust) but was undertaken as a top-down clean, anti-rust, undercoat and full re-paint. This was done with assistance and advice from your Ed., acting in his HRASA role, and involved both the restoration and the providing of advice on colour schemes, technical information, diagrams etc. that will be used as part of the educational aspect of the display.

An interesting stage of this process was when the two were, for a short while, to be seen in overall silver – very non-standard but amazingly photogenic in bright sunlight, which your Ed. was able to record as part of his involvement. Since then the final coats of paint, to original colour schemes, are in the process of being applied and the two are sure to look very smart when completed.
