"Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Loco's" Jeff Wilson

Post by Kevin Wilson-Smith »

The Model Railroader's Guide to Diesel Locomotives by Jeff Wilson is an excellent new book from Kalambach.

A really good to guide to American Diesel locos, it starts with a history of the Diesel Loco and then moves on to how diesel locos work.

From there the history of each type of diesel loco is considered by Generic type e.g. early locos, carbody locos etc. right up to modern locos.

The operation of diesel locomotives, and how to determine appropriate eras, details and features, and the type of specialized diesel service operated are all gone into.

Covered is the history of each individual loco, along with road numbers, spotting features and characteristics. Admittedly coverage is brief, as befits a book of this size (88 pages), but it is very thorough and well done.

An out-standing feature is timelines in graphical form for each engine which clearly shows their production period and service span – really great.

The modelling part is confined to a an Annexure listing available models in the various scales – so this book is work it as well if you are not a modeller!

All in all an excellent reference, crammed with essential information (and plenty of new information) for any American diesel loco buff.

Highly recommended!
