Boiler inspector Des Painton washed out the boiler on 2650 today.

Des was pleased with the colour and consistency of this mud, which he says indicates that water treatment is being used correctly. If it were white and more solid he would be concerned.

John and others,

Somehow, it always amazes me how much scale, mud and other bits of dirt build up inside a boiler. Even more surprising, is after the boiler is washed out completely, how the dirt, mud and scale changes the colour of the ground below the washout plugs.

Shows how important it is to blow down the boiler regularly, while the loco in steam . . . . . . .

Who ever lights-up and or fires 2650 next, will be pleased . . . . .

Thank you Des Painton for looking after all the FotR locomotive boilers for us . . . . .!

Good selection of photos and very interesting to see how its done. This is a side of railway operations that is often forgotten about.
