Hex River tunnel

Post by allanroy »

This is one of the tunnels in the Hex River valley. You can see the old railway tunnel above the new tunnel.

Hi
I can remember the old Tuinnel Station, with its passing siding remaining level but the mailclimbed at 1 in 40.
When crossoing you haeded into one of the level sidings and when it was your turn to go you backed into the sidings on the opposite side of the main and eventually you pulled out. Operwting did not like crossong there because it took so long. I was told before the 50s electrification some of the steam freights would have to stop and build up steam pressure.
Interesting bit of history form my father. Up until the government changed in SA in 1952 the railways were building a new line to ease the gradients. When the national party camr to power they said it was simpler, and cheaper to electrify the line. How true this is I dont know.

Do you have any pictuires of the old Tunnel station?
