Friends of (Nairobi) Railway Museum

Post by John Ashworth »

There was a meeting of Friends of (Nairobi) Railway Museum - FORM - this afternoon. Members include Kenya Railways and Rift Valley Railways staff, including drivers and fitters, the business community, and other railway enthusiasts. The driver sitting on the far right of the picture came straight from a duty turn and there had been some prior speculation that he would arrive at the gates of the museum in a Class 87; unfortunately he had already handed it over to the shed foreman. He was jokingly told that he wouldn't be allowed in to the next meeting unless he brings it with him! Maurice Barasa, the museum curator, chairs the meeting at the head of the table on the right. The Friends aim to publicise the museum and raise funds to implement specific projects to help develop the museum.

Members are sitting around the Captain's table salvaged from the Konigsberg, a German warship sunk during World War I. Behind them is the Captain's cupboard.

The second shot is a bonus - a random view from the door of the museum building. It shows how neat and well-kept the museum is.

Now that is something that SA, with all its superior resources, cannot boast. A meeting of heritage and business folk with a vision to make steam tourism work. Here they meet in secret CTC offices plotting the final solution to the steam problem. The SA Steam Holocaust has almost reached its final phase!
