33 Class in Chile

SQM #5 was one of 4 (?) purchased by Casagrande from ALL/FCA Brazil in c.2001, ex Namibia

This is the old Cape gauge partially electrified FCTT system out of Tocopilla in the Atacama desert
Sister loco #4 similar but retains the "dustbin lid" compressor air cleaner (?) lid on the LHS (very similar to FO #2009 below)

They are 1930's vintage GE boxcabs

ALL sold 3 U20C locomotive No. 2663, No. 2668 and No. 2679 (original SAR # 33-410, # 33-452 and # 33-481) in 2003, this two are in the FOB, No. 2008 and 2009.
The locomotive No. 2677 ALL listed as returned RFFSA, strange fact, probably was downloaded by accident, may have been sold in this condition.
The photograph of the locomotive No. 2009 FOB you already posted, the 2008 is low.

Was the picture of U20C1 No. 4 of MCS, or possibly the engine number 4 can be a Chilean U13C?

a ALL vendeu 3 locomotivas U20C nº2663, nº2668 e nº2679 (original SAR #33-410, #33-452 and #33-481), em 2003, desta duas estão na FOB, nº 2008 e 2009.
A locomotiva ALL nº2677 consta como devolvida a RFFSA, fato estranho, provavelmente foi baixada por acidente, pode ter sido vendida nesta condição.
A fotografia da locomotiva FOB nº2009 voce já postou, a 2008 está a baixo.
Teria a foto da U20C1 nº4 da SQM, ou eventualmente essa locomotiva numero 4 pode ser uma U13C Chilena?

There is 1.8 meters difference in the length of a U13C and a U20C, so easy to ID.

Both number 4 and 5 are rebuilds of ex SAS/SAR 33 Class by Cassagrande at Chena (Santiago). I measured both #5 and another U20C (see below) at Chena in April 2010 and both were 52' (15.85 meters)
Latin Tracks #16 reported (with photo) that Casagrande purchased 4 cores ex FCA/ALL. It appears that 3 of these were ex SAS/SAR 33 Class, and the 4th is a Brazilian built U20C with a flat faced cab. Brazilian unit was stored under cover, and impossible to get photo.

thanks for my exclarecer doubt, believed that Hall had sold only three locomotives diet for FOB, I would try to find that this 4th locomotive.
Do you know the relationship between the number or ALL previous and current SAR SQM or FOB?
I will soon post information on the GT26 and GT18 former SAR ALL.

The 3 ex SAS/SAR 33 Class purchased by Casagrande from ALL in circa 2001 are accounted for.
Casagrande rebuilt 1 for sale to Empresa Ferroviaria Oriental, S.A., plus the 2 rebuilds for SQM
The fourth (Brazilean built U20C) is still stored at Chena, last photos of her that I have seen are dated May 2011, the frame/cab is partially rebuilt, on BG shop bogies, is now parked outdoors, with the long hood off SQM #1 (U12C) stored on top of her
Casagrande at Chena are SQM's current contractor for rebuilding. SQM #1 was totally rebuilt with new hoods circa 2008.
In August/September 2011 SQM #5 was working Barilles-Maria Elena, with #4 sighted behind the wire at Pedro de Valdivia working the nitrate pampa.
SQM #4 still retains the South African long hood. The long hood on #5 is a Casagrande fabrication, and does not have the "dustbin lid" on the LHS.
I have crawled over #5, typical Casegrande rebuild with ID marks and tags ground off. This is common Chilean practice, (as with NREC in the States), pass a rebuild off as your own creation, add your own tags, and try to capture the replacement part sale. NREC are past masters at this practice, even replating new Cummins diesel engines with their own part/tag numbers. It makes ID of rebuilds very difficult.
Richard lives in Iquique, which is 210 km north of Tocopilla, so he may have contacts in the SQM Maria Elena backshop. SQM security is pervasive, and few seem to gain access behind the wire. Outside the wire it is a different story, we have found the crews chatty and friendly, I managed a short cab ride in a (Casagrande) rebuilt ex CODELCO SW1200M in the vicinity of Coya Sur in 2010.

Barriles (1006 meters) at the crest of the coastal escarpment, is where the electrics hand over to diesels, for the run inland to the nitrate pampa and the processing plants. Diesels occasionally over run the yard, with disastrous results. This wreck on 20/11/2009, killed the driver. The yard foreman had driven his pick-up truck alongside the overshooting loco, and the conductor had jumped, but the driver froze and was killed.
