Grounded ship hits rail services

A stretch of railway line was closed after a ship ran aground in rough seas in Northern Ireland.

The vessel was on its way to Turkey when it hit a jetty at Culmore outside Londonderry, close to the waters edge at Lough Foyle.

It was later taken away for repairs.

Rail services between Derry and Coleraine were disrupted for a time before checks were carried out and the track reopened.

The Londonderry to Bellarena railway line, which was closed after a ship ran aground near the track, has reopened.

It is believed the vessel was on its way to Turkey when it got into trouble off Culmore Point and hit a jetty connected to the rail line.

A bus substitution had been in place to allow Translink to investigate if any damage was caused. Translink said train services had now returned to normal.

The ship has been towed into Lismore quays in Derry.
