Sudan Cranes

Post by John Ashworth »

My thanks to Chris Capewell for the list and for sending me the photos. The first two are by Alan Clothier; the photographer is unknown for the third, but if he sees it and lets us know we will be happy to credit him or remove it.

The list is attached, where the format is a little easier to read, and copied below:

Notes:

1. Appleby supplied early railway equipment, possibly including hand powered cranes.
Grafton also worked in the Sudan and thus may have sold early cranes there.
Ransomes and Rapier almost certainly provided some sluice gate handling cranes for Nile barrage works.

2. Locations
Atbara the main workshops. Five regions with branch workshops in the towns of Kassala, Kosti, Sinar, El-Obeid, Khartoum, Port Sudan, and El-Rahad

3.Abbreviations / Translations
CS Cowans Sheldon, Carlisle.
G Grafton, Vulcan Works, Bedford
R&R Ransome and Rapier, Ipswich.
S&P Stothert and Pitt, Bath

= Jib, = Axles, = Capacity propped or blocked up

4.Thanks

Alan Clothier C.Eng, FIMechE
WTT 1 November 1945
WTT 15 November 1967

5.Miscellanea

Sudan Railways were by 2010 more or less defunct.
The likelihood any of the diesel cranes have had spares ordered is nearly nil.
They are probably all dumped.

I am reasonably certain it is a Ransomes and Rapier delivered to the
railway ca 1905 as a steam crane but changed to hand power. The
carriage looks like a full proper railway carriage.
Nick McWilliams wrote:Hello Chris,

I happened to come across your page "Surviving Railway Cranes in
Africa". I am not at all knowledgeable about such matters, but I was
working in Juba, South Sudan, a few years ago (2007), and I am always
intrigued by signs of former times that I stumble upon around Africa.
In this case I was looking around the old port area on the Nile and
took some photos of a rail-mounted crane. I imagine it was once
adjacent to river, to lift loads from the Nile barges which travelled
from northern Sudan, but siltation on the river has moved the bank.

Attached are low-res versions, but if they're of interest, I can send
the original resolution pictures. You are welcome to use these on your
webpage (http://www.internationalsteam.co.uk/cra ... africa.htm)

I'll be interested to hear any comments from you.

Thanks and best wishes,

Nick.

PS the last photo is just for interest, what I guess it is an old
Bedford, which was sitting nearby, and like many others, still in use.
I'm in Juba at the moment, so I must look out for that crane! The Bedford trucks are still quite common. This one has a Ugandan registration number. There's one in the Kenya Railways workshop in Nairobi that still works. I drove one in South Sudan about 25 years ago, but I think that one hit a landmine eventually and is no longer with us.
