SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTRIC LOCO TENDERS

Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) is to invite tenders for 599 new dual-voltage electric locomotives for use in its general freight business division. A clarification meeting with prospective bidders is to take place on 16 August. A R40,000 non-refundable tender charge applies.

The first 65 units are to be delivered in 2015, then 130 in 2016. A further 130 will be required in 2017 and 2018, with the final 144 following in 2019.

Over and above the 599, TFR envisages ordering 112 more class 19E dual-voltage electric locos for the Richards Bay coal line and an additional 23 class 15E 50kV AC units for the Sishen-Saldanha ore route.
