This locomotive is being actively modified to fit the New Zealand loading gauge and is to be fitted with air brakes in place of the existing vacuum brakes.

When I first visited New Zealand in 1963 Paekakariki was the end of the electrified system North of Wellington where all trains were handed over to Steam or Diesel.
The workshops are located in the old steam shed where Ka 4-8-4 954 was waiting in steam to take over a northbound train. The turntable is still there and in use.
