'Why are US train drivers called engineers?'

Ask a real train driver or fireman questions about how engines work, railways operate or anything else. If we do not know the answer, we will find out!

That's an interesting article, there's a lot I didn't know there. In North America we also call them enginemen. Guys who drive subway trains are called "motormen."
Since BBC has a photo of an English driver, I'm including a photo of what was usual engineer dress in many prts of North America. These days, in many cases, engine crews no longer bother with this getup since they no longer have to worry about getting cinders in their hair.
