Happy retirement, Dirk!

Post by John Ashworth »

Trains run to timetables, but when there are odd, unusual or extra trains they have to be issued with a special authorisation to run, called a YQ. This includes steam trains run by FOTR. For many years the Spoornet and then Transnet official who issued the YQs for us was Dirk Coetzee. He never failed to issue one when we needed one, and always managed to help us at short notice when there were last-minute changes. Nathan and the others who dealt with him directly always found him friendly and cooperative. Now we learn that he is retiring after 42 years with Spoornet and then Transnet. On behalf of all the old FOTR members who benefited from his YQs, we wish to thank him and wish him a long and happy retirement. Thanks, Dirk!
