The Gauteng re-signalling project executed by Siemens Mobility South Africa places the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) in the best possible position to deliver safe, reliable and predictable services for commuters in the province. In addition, PRASA included a pilot ETCS installation for seven of its stations to ensure the company is ETCS level 2 ready, thus, offering the flexibility to meet future network growth as well as safety through digital based interlocking. Replacing the obsolete relay-based signalling system, some of which dated back to pre-World War II, with a new signalling system based on the electronic interlocking technology (SICAS S7) – complying to Safety Integrity Level (SIL-4) – provides PRASA with a full bi-directional system that is designed to achieve a 2.5 minute headway capacity.
