Konza train crossing - 2

Post by John Ashworth »

9316, hauling a 140-axle empty freight train, stands in the loop waiting to cross the Magadi train. This is an RVR loco despite the Magadi branding. It was on lease to Magadi but is now off lease but hasn't yet been repainted in RVR colours.

In the first picture the train is standing clear of the clearance mark between the main line and the second road, but foul of the mark for the thrid road, as the driver was not aware of which train he would cross when he first arrived. In the second picture it can be seen that he has now set back clear of the mark for the third road, which is the road on which the Magadi train will be admitted. When I walked back I saw that this put the rear of the train foul of the mark for the third road at the rear. This was safe as the rear of the train was protected by signals, and the junction points on the third road were set for Magadi.

In Kenya what we in South Africa call a "clearance mark" is called a "fouling mark" - both terms make equal sense. It is marked by a sleeper or piece of rail painted white lying between the tracks, as with us.

Reflective end of train marker. The rear of the train is now foul of the clearance mark between the second and third roads.
