I know that question begs the answer no I am getting bigger! However, that is not the case.
Recently travelling to Aberdeen I was struck by the difference in sizes of seating. Starting out on the SBB Mk IV space was ample as was the case in the DB ICE to Bruxelles, in the Eurostar there was no problem. From London Kings Cross the journey was on an electric loco hauled service - about 20 years old - to Edinburgh; space in the carriage was fine and there was ample room to eat ones meals as they were brought to the table. After Edinburgh I had to change to an awful EMU for the journey to Aberdeen, in which the seats were cramped and if the fellow passengers were thinly challenged it was a major problem.
I have noticed that seats in the UK are being replaced by airline style units that defy any logic in view of the expansion of the current human frame. Also I read that the famous GWR King class locos were being declared 'out of gauge' on some lines that used to be their stamping grounds, which led me to thinking that UK trains themselves are getting smaller This 'oog' has even affected some Southern steam locomotives.
Am I correct or is it a case of taking more water with the malt?
