‘We’ll cut the train journey from London to Scotland to less than three hours’

Fast trains would link London to Scotland in less than three hours under plans unveiled today.
New Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin announced a study on using the proposed High Speed 2 line to slash journey times from London to Edinburgh and Glasgow from five hours to under three.
This would boost business links and make it easier for Londoners to dash to Scotland for a weekend break or longer holidays.
Initially the High Speed line will run from London to Birmingham by 2026, reducing this journey to just 45 minutes, before reaching further north to Manchester and Leeds by 2033.
But Mr McLoughlin was set to tell delegates at the party conference that cutting the journey time to Scotland, by high speed or existing lines, by even more than previously planned is now being considered.
A growing number of Tories are raising concerns over the £33 billion high speed line. But Mr McLoughlin was set to say: “We can’t afford not to build it.†...
