Pedantically, of course, steam has never run on the tube and is not doing so now, as technically the tube refers to the deep lines, not to the shallow cut-and-cover lines such as Earl's Court to Moorgate. But to most ordinary Londoners, and probably most tourists, the entire London Underground system is known as the Tube.
