New Zealand Plains Railway

Post by Ian Roberts »

Visit to New Zealand
At the Plains Railway Society in Tynwald, Ashburton south of Christchurch on 2015-10-26.
The main attraction here is a working Rogers class K 2-4-2 No 88, dating from 1878. These locomotives were the first express locomotives on the 3’ 6” national system.
They were rebuilt with belpaire boilers starting about 1900 in place of the original United States type wagon-top boiler.
After 1926 most were dumped on river banks to control erosion.

Also present was the hulk of another K class No 94 in the state it was recovered from the river bank which demonstrates the work required to get No 88 into its present condition.

Another interesting locomotive was an A Class 0-4-0T No 64 built in 1873 by Dubs in Glasgow and used in construction and branch line work until sold into industrial duty at a meat works.

There was also a Vulcan Foundry diesel rail car dating back to 1940 (Note the A-1-A bogie under the engine room to spread the weight.
